Car Hire in Zante
Hiring a car in Zante or Zakynthos gives you the freedom to explore
the island at your own pace. No longer will you rely on local bus services or your
holiday reps to get you to the places you want to see. Many people choose to explore
the rugged and wind swept west coast of the island, but also the more densely populated
east coast is perfect for finding wonderful beaches and charming little villages.
Car hire is by far the best way to get around the gorgeous island, from the breathtaking white cliffs of Keri to the most photographed beach of Navagio or Smugglers Cove. You can see the fantastic blue caves, with the stunning clear blue waters carving out caves and holes in the cliffs. You can see these from Agios Nikolaos or Keri itself.
You can take a ferry to the island of Olympia, the island where the Olympics were
born, this is a great way to use your Zante hire car. There is also a ferry to the
island of Kefalonia which you can jump on after leaving you car in Zante Town.
When
you hire your car, make sure you check and compare the best prices available, and
also the insurance. Its well recommended to hire a car before you travel to Zante
as once your there the prices are inflated by the holiday companies and local car
hire is sometimes hit and miss.
If you do decide to book your Zante car hire before you travel, you can choose to pick it up at the hotel or Zakynthos airport, and it comes with a full tank of petrol and usually a road map and quick guides on places to visit while your on holiday in Zante.
Top Zante Sights
Your first port of call would have to be the charming town of Zante
Town, with its large and bustling port surrounded by quaint cafes and restaurants.
Its medieval buildings and excellent architecture. Take time to stop off and explore
the old town and the many local shops for some excellent bargains.
Moving inland you will find a few museums dotted around like Helmi’s natural history
museums which is a great place to visit with the family and especially kids. Find
out about the wildlife and flora and fauna of Zante. This is just off the small
village of Agios Marina.
Near the the village and again just inland is the cultural
museum “Vertgagio” which is great for finding out about Zante culture and information
on how the islanders used to live, with everything on olive oil and wine production
to examples of how the island has progressed over the centuries.
If you have had your
fill of culture and museums head for Smugglers Cove which has some breathtaking sights
and gives you the opportunity for some wonderful photos. A point to note is that
you cant actually reach the beach this way as it can only be reached from the sea
so booking a boat trip is a must.
For another enjoyable day out take the family to
Zante Water Village, this top waterpark is a great day out and with excellent parking
facilities its an easy choice for those with access to their own car. Zante water
village is only 4km from Zante Town, and is very well signposted.
