What to do in Zante Town
There is plenty to visit in this town, try out the museums
mentioned above, also explore the local markets and venture down side alleys and
the winding roads to find some truly unique Taverna’s, small local cafes serving
up a nice Frappe.
There is plenty of opportunity to go shopping in the many local stores, you can pick up some excellent duty free bargains or local souvenirs like honey or hand crafted gifts. If your looking for cheap designer labels you will not be disappointed with the likes of Diesel, Levis and much more.
After a long day shopping you can sit in one of the many local cafes or fast food chains within the town, watch the world go by or even enjoy a light snack. Many people choose to visit the cafes and restaurants near the port, and you will see the boats and ferries arriving and departing on a regular basis.
Nightlife in Zante Town is quite hectic, but not over the top like Laganas, its more refined here with the locals going out to have a good time and not get too drunk. The clubs here are the best on the island but the drink prices will reflect on your lavish surroundings. The atmosphere here for the visiting tourist is excellent and most barmen speak English anyway.
A lot of people choose to holiday in Zante Town, and its just 5 minutes coach transfer from the airport. It has everything you need for a city break with the beaches of Argassi and Kalamaki just a stones throw away. Many people choose to stay here in the summer months and just hire a car and go out and explore the island. You can also catch a ferry or short plane ride to the Greek island of Kefalonia if you want to try island hopping or see somewhere different.
Zante Town -
Located at the centre of the east Coast of the island, all roads lead to Zante Town
so its not hard to find. Rebuilt after the 1953 earthquakes and fires, the buildings
were built in traditional Venetian style. This is the place to go if you want to
find the history and culture of Zakynthos, the streets are crammed with little shops
and traditional cafes nestled in side alleys and sprawled out all over the town.
The
town was historically known as The Venice of the South and stepping off the ferry
into the town you will know why.
Zante Town is not a beach resort but a economic centre bustling with over 30,000 inhabitants, with local markets, fish constantly being offloaded in the port and bustling street and shop trade.
The hotels in Zante town are affordable and standards within the hotels are top quality, your bet bet for a hotel only stay within Zante Town is with Alpharooms. The town also has one or two hostels for backpackers and they are easy enough to find in the main town.
You can find many museums dotted around the town including Museum of Byzantine Art & Solomos Museum. The Museum of Zakynthos holds an interesting collection of local historical artefacts. Zante town is well worth a visit if the ideal holiday is exploring local culture...
